On 5 July 2024, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President (HR/VP) of the European Commission, Josep Borrell Fontelles, and the Minister of Defence (MoD) of the Hellenic Republic, Nikos Dendias, visited the Operation Headquarters (OHQ) of the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES in Larissa and had the opportunity to be briefed by the Commander (OpCdr) of Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis (HN). The HR/VP also presented the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES medal to the OHQ hierarchy, expressing appreciation to all operation members of the operation for their commitment and dedication to this challenging operation.
The joint statements made by the HR/VP and Greek MoD emphasized the role of Operation ASPIDES in supporting the European Union’s strategic compass and contributing as a security provider in a strategic area. This operation aims to protect the lives of seafarers, ensure global trade, protect global common goods, uphold freedom of navigation, and contribute to regional peace and security.
