Since 2000, Greece has declared its will to contribute to EU Vision for a Stronger Europe, by providing a Headquarters (HQ), capable of assuming Common Security and Defense Policy Operations.
In July 2005, the Hellenic First Army designated as the EL EU OHQ’s Parent Headquarters.
In February 2007, the OHQ was relocated to its present facilities.
In June 2009, the Hellenic EU OHQ carried out the Crisis management Exercise MILEX 2009. Thanks to the successful conduct of the exercise, the Headquarters was qualified as fully operational, capable of assuming Crisis Management Operations under EU command.
According to Lisbon treaty, article 43, in 2009 EU decided that its forces, can undertake the type of Missions as above:
• Joint Disarmament Operations
• Humanitarian and Rescue
• Military Advice and Assistance
• Conflict Prevention and Peace keeping
• Combat forces in Crisis Management, including Peace-making and Post-conflict stabilization
